Date: August, 7 Hello fishermen; Hope you all are keeping away from all the smoke from the fires. It is really smoky here in the north state. I just got back from my fishing in Alaska. I was fishing on the Kenai river for the big Kings. We had a pretty good season. Most the fish averaged around 30 pounds. I did catch a lot over 40 pounds and a few over 50 pounds. My biggest in the boat was 58 pounds. In fact that day I had 3 over 50 pounds and the rest over 40 pounds. Was a great day on the river. The only bad thing about the summer was the cold weather. It was the coldest summer in 50 years. I know there was not one day over 70 degrees and very few over 60. All it did was rain and blow. Lucky I had long johns with me. Now I am back in the heat. Just can not have something in the middle. I am starting to fish on the lower Klamath River now and will be there until the end of Sept. The fishing is ok. There are a few Salmon showing up and even more Steelhead. The river is in good shape and they are predicting a big run this year and gave us a big quota. So if you are looking to catch Salmon this year the Klamath River is your best bet. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: June, 28 Hello fishermen; We are now done with the Salmon fly hatch. The hatch was good but the fishing just was not as good as it usually is. The river was high and still is. This made it tough to fish and the flies not being in front of the fish long with all the current. We also did not have that great of weather either. We did get a few good days in and caught some nice Trout. The best day we landed close to 25 trout and a few over 18 inches. So there were fish just not our 50 to 100 fish days we like. I am now off to fish Alaska and will be up there until Aug. With the closure on the Sacramento River this year I will be fishing the lower Klamath River for the Salmon. It looks to be a great season with a lot of fish. So if you are looking to catch Salmon this year the Klamath is your best bet. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: May, 30 Hello fishermen; Well the Trout fishing on the Klamath River has started now. The fishing has been ok. The weather has not been very good the past week. We have gotten more rain then sunny days, which has slowed things down. The good news is that the Salmon flies are starting to come out. They have not been flying yet but will start as soon as our weather gets warmer. I fished the past few days and did ok. I could not get the fish on the surface but wet flies were working. We tried just about everything but drifting the Salmon flies themselves was the best. We landed about 15 nice Trout with the biggest being 18 inches. The fishing should only get better as each day passes. So I am looking for great dry fly fishing all the rest of this Month. Just another note, They have decided to close the Sacramento River for the fall run Salmon this year. The runs have been bad the past few years and not admitting that it was their doing the fish and game is taking it out on us. The good news is that they gave a bigger quota on the Klamath River so I will be fishing there in Aug and Sept on the lower river. The fishing should be great. So if you are looking for a place to get your Cal Salmon the Klamath is your best bet. Or I should say the only place. Hopefully this closure helps or it may be the start of a lot of other closures. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: May, 16 Hello fishermen; I know I have not put up a report for a long time, but have had some time off and not on the computer. I am now going to start fishing the upper Klamath River for the Trout. The river is finally coming down now. All the snow we had this winter has had the river really high and not fishable. Now it is down under 2000 cfs and clear. The weather has turned big time now so the bugs are going to be hatching. It was around 50 degrees last week and the mornings were in the 20's and now it is over 90 degrees out and not getting cold at night. So I am looking to have a great trout season. The Salmon flies should start coming out pretty soon. So if you want some great dry fly fishing for Trout June is going to great on the Klamath. Albert
Date: March, 20 Hello fishermen; We finally got the rain we have been waiting for. The past week we got almost 3 inches and the rivers are up and fishing great. The Chetco is now down to 4000 cfs and the Smith is at 17 feet. Both have good color now but are getting clearer each day. The rain did bring more fish in and the downers are out there in good numbers also. My best day this week we had 8 fish on and landed 6 of them. We did get 2 nice fresh Steelhead and the rest were downers. Not bad for this time of year. I am getting most my fish on bait but there are a few plug biters. Most the fish have been about 8 pounds this a few over 10 pounds. This last raise in the rivers should keep the fishing good through the rest of the season. The Chetco will close the end of the month and the smith at the end of the next. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: March, 12 Hello fishermen; The fishing has been pretty good this past week. I have been on the Chetco river the past few days and averaging 1 to 4 fish a trip. The good thing is that we are seeing a few fresh fish still coming in. Yesterday we had 1 upper and the rest were downers. We are catching most our fish drifting bait and a fish pill, but there are few days that the plugs have worked well also. The Smith River is starting to get pretty clear now and is at 16.5 feet and the Chetco is getting down under 2000 cfs. I fished the Smith river the other day and did very good. We landed 5 very nice Steelhead. That was a very great day and I wish they all were like that. Then the next day we only caught one. What a difference a day makes. We are getting a lot of wind and rain at this time so hopefully it will bring the rivers up some. Today was a lot slower because of the wind, not the rain as much. There were times we could not fish because it was blowing to hard. We did catch fish just not as many as we wanted. Tomorrow is another day. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: February, 27 Hello fishermen; The weather is still very nice out, with no rain at all. The rivers are even lower and could not get any clearer. The Chetco is at all time low and hardly has any current. There are still fish in it but they are hard to get to bite without any moving water. Boats are getting about a fish a day. Not very good. You are having to push through a lot of riffles to get down. I have been fishing on the Smith river the past week and doing ok. I am catching 1 to 3 fish each day. Not bad for the low clear water. There are few spots That I am getting a bite or catching a fish in every day. The fish I have been getting have been very nice. They have been averaging about 10 pounds and fighting like they are much bigger. This is very surprising for how cold the water is. The water is around 39 degrees. A lot of the bites we get are very slow because of this. Hopefully we get some rain soon or we will not be able to get through some riffles. Rain is coming but just when is the question. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: February, 19 Hello fishermen; Well we are still having great weather. In fact I am getting one hell of a sun burn on my nose. Hard to believe that just about 2 weeks ago we were not fishing with the river at flood stage. The fishing has slowed down the past few days. The rivers are getting clear. The reason for the slow fishing was all the boats and fishermen we had on the river this last weekend. I could not believe the number of people out on the rivers. You could not look around and look at just the river without seeing a few boats. So if you are looking to get away from the crowds do not come to the Smith or Chetco rivers. We have been catching fish just not the numbers that we were last week, but at least we are catching a few each day. I have been still using bait and a puff ball or fish pills. I think I have caught fish on just about every color in my box so there is not one better then another. Just getting in front of the fish is the secret. Both rivers are getting low and clear. We do need some rain to bring the fish that are waiting to come in. The Smith river is down under 16 feet and the Chetco is down under 2000 cfs. Most the fish we have been catching have been nice bright fresh fish but we are starting to see a few more downers showing up. We will see more downers as the month moves on but there are still a lot of new fish showing up so the fishing will continue to be good through March. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: Feb. 10 Hello fishermen; This past week of fishing has been ok. The water levels are down and the rivers are in great condition but the fish really do not want to bite. I am catching fish every day just not what I think I should for the color and level. I have been getting 2 to 4 fish a day but I am working for them. I did have one great day last Tuesday. We hooked over 10 fish and had our limits around 12:00. I wish every day was like that but we all know it can not be. Most the fish I have been catching have been averaging around 7 to 8 pounds but we are seeing a few big fish show up. The Smith river had 5 Steelhead over 20 pounds just in this last week. I did also get another fish that was 20 pounds yesterday. I caught that one on the lower Chetco river. It was a great fish just out of the ocean and was a great fight. We also landed one that was 15 pounds today. So there are some nice fish out there. The weather is changing now so hopefully it will not rain to much. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: Feb. 2nd Hello fishermen; Well Feb is starting out kind of like Jan, a lot of rain. The only good thing is that the snow level is low and we are not getting the run off. The rivers did go out on Thursday but they are starting to drop and will be fishing again soon. The reason the rivers went out was because it got warm out and melted al lot of the snow we had in the mountains above us. But just before that all happened the fishing was pretty good. I was hooking 4 to 8 fish a day. Just not landing them all. The last day we fished we had 5 fish on and landed 3 of them. Most of them were around 8 pounds but we had one that was 14 pounds. It was one that had a heart of one even bigger. It took about 1/2 a mile of river to land him. At least he is still out there to make more. When the weather does slow down we are going to have some great fishing on the Smith River. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: Jan. 28th Hello fishermen; Well the weather has been giving us it all. The past few days we have had rain, sleet, snow and sun shine, and that was all in one day. This morning we started with a inch of snow ever where. It was cold. The great thing about all the weather we have been having the rivers are still in great shape and are actually low. The Smith river is at 16 feet and the Chetco river at 2700 cfs. They are low but they do have some color. The fishing has been pretty good. I have been averaging 2 to 4 fish a day and a few with only hooking a few but not landing them. I had one really good day that we landed 7 fish. That was even with the river clear and on the rise. You just don't know when you are going to get that day of a life time. The fish have all been averaging 7 to 8 pounds with a few over 10. The biggest I have caught this year was a few days ago when we got one bite and landed a very nice 20 pounder. It was a fish of a life time. It will look great on Jerry's wall. That was a day were Quality is a lot better then Quantity. The weather is going to be about the same for awhile so I think the rivers well still be fish until it gets warm and all that snow starts to melt. Hopefully it will be slow so the rivers will not go out. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: Jan. 22nd Hello fishermen; The weather has been nice and clear and so are our rivers. The Smith River is at 15 feet and very clear and the Chetco river is at 1000 cfs and clear. The temperature has been very cold. The mornings are in the low 30,s and it is not getting more then the mid to high 40,s in the afternoons. This is bringing the water temperature down also. So some days have been hard to get the fish to bite and others ok. I have been on both rivers the past few days and neither is fishing better then the other. My best day this week was on the Chetco where we landed 4 very nice Steelhead. We are still catching most our fish on bait and a puff ball but with the colder water they are biting a plug now and again. The fishing on other rivers are starting to get good also so we are not getting all the traffic that we were. That is great for all of us and the fish. We have not had any rain for over 2 weeks now and now we could use some, so hopefully we will see some soon. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: Jan. 18th Hello fishermen; The fishing has been pretty good on the Smith and Chetco River this past week. At least we are fishing again. The storms that came through put the rivers out for over a week. So we were watching a lot of water go by and fish that we were not catching. Now we have good conditions and catching a few fish. I have been fishing on the Smith and Chetco and averaging 2 to 3 fish a day. All the fish I have been catching have been drifting bait and a puff ball. Most the fish have been around 8 pounds and a few over 10. I have not got any more big ones yet but I have seen a couple close to 20 pounds landed. The weather has been awesome, the sun has been out and we are in tee shirts by the end of the day. Just have to have a lot of clothes on in the morning. The only bad thing is that there are way to many boats out there. With the river coming down and getting clearer all the boats going over the fish is turning the bite off some. So if you are looking to go fishing just know there are a lot more out there with you. Hope to see you on river. Albert
Date: Jan. 6th Hello fishermen; Hope you all had a great holiday season and are having a good new year. The new year started out pretty good, the rivers were in good shape and the fishing was good. Just as the fishing was getting great on the Chetco river the rains hits us hard. I was getting limits every day and with some nice Steelhead. Most the fish were about 10 pounds and I did get a couple 15 pounders. We have not been fishing this past weekend with the rivers high and muddy. The only good thing was that the snow level was way down and stopped the run off and the rivers are on the way back down. Yesterday there was a lot of snow on the upper Chetco river and was tough just to drive around. Today the sun is out and it is not raining, the Smith river is at 18 feet and the Chetco river is at 5500 cfs they should be fishing soon. They might go back up when the snow melts. The fishing is looking to be pretty good this year. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: Dec. 20th Hello fishermen; Well I am done fishing for the Steelhead on the upper Klamath River. Not because they are not there but moving to fish the Smith and Chetco Rivers for the bigger Steelhead. The fishing on the Klamath river should be good through the winter depends on the water. We have been having some pretty wet weather here the past few days but that is what we want to bring the fish in. The Fishing on the coast has been pretty good. All the water we got earlier has brought the Steelhead in early. Every day I fished there we caught fish. So the rest of the winter is looking to be great. Hope to see you on the river. Have a great X-mas and New Year Albert
Date: Dec. 10th Hello fishermen; The fishing on the upper Klamath River has been pretty good this last week. We had a pretty good day down in Happy Camp the other day. We caught a lot of half pounders and a few adult Steelhead. The best thing that day was bait. Side drifting or dragging it was working. The water was really cold so most the bites were slow but if you noticed them you hooked them. The only thing was biting that light they always did not stay on, but 4 or 5 big ones did. Most the bigger ones were around 20 inches and the biggest was 23 inches. It was raining all that day so the next day we had to go up higher to get clearer water. The Scott River was dumping in a lot of water and was muddy. The bite was not as good but we did get a few. The river is fishing really good again with it back down. The past few days I was on the Smith River. There are not to many Salmon left so we fished for the Steelhead. The river was up and had some color but we did catch one nice Steelhead about 8 pounds. The next few days the river was down and fishing great. We caught are limit every day. There are not a bunch in but there are plenty of bites to get a few in the boat. Most the fish have been around 7 to 9 pounds but we did get a few over 10 pounds. The rivers are down now but the fish are still there just a little spooky. So you have to keep off of them when fishing. It is looking like we are going to have another great Steelhead season on the Smith and Chertco Rivers. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: Dec. 1st Hello fishermen; Hope you all are staying warm. It is really cold here every morning. It has been in the teens and this morning was the coldest, it was 10 degrees. This has not slowed the fishing down to much. The early mornings are slow but it picks up as it gets warmer. I have been catching a lot of my Steelhead on plugs and bait. I have been using flies also and catching fish. The best fly has been a egg pattern. Most the fish we have been catching are around 3 pounds but this last week I did get a few over 5 pounds. My best day this last week we caught 6 nice Steelhead and a bunch of Trout. That day a plug was the best. The weather is suppose to stay the same through the weekend but we finally have a storm coming in early this week. At least I hope so we can use some more water on the coastal rivers. They are really low and clear and this is making the fishing very tough. So think rain . The Salmon fishing has slowed down, but the good news is that we have seen a few Steelhead showing up. This is a great sign for the winter Steelhead fishing. If you are going just dress warm. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: Nov. 23rd Hello fishermen; Our Steelhead fishing on the upper Klamath River has been pretty good. I have been fishing from Happy Camp up to Iron Gate Dam and averaging 3 to 6 Steelhead a day. I have had a few days that have been really good but most have been ok. Most of the fish we are catching are on bait or egg patterns and have been averaging around 3 to 4 pounds. There are some Salmon still spawning so the fish are still sitting behind these beds. I am starting to get a few on plugs also. The water is getting colder now so the mornings are a little slow but gets better as it get warmer. The weather has been nice the past few days with a lot of sun shine. This clear weather make our mornings cold and gets warmer in the afternoon. The mornings have been in the low 20's and gets up in the 50's later. So dress warm. I did fish for Salmon on the Smith River this past week. The river started out low and clear but then the rain came and put the river out for a few days. Of course it did not start to fish good until I left. I did catch a few while I was there but none that were of any size. The Salmon fishing should be good there up into Dec. Just depends on the weather. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: Nov. 14th Hello fishermen; Well the Salmon are all done now on the Klamath River. There are a lot still laying on the spawning beds which is helping to feed the Trout and Steelhead. The Steelhead fishing has been ok. There are more coming in each day. A lot of them are laying behind the spawning beds so I have been using egg patterns or bait. The bite has been a little slow this past week but the lower river is seeing more Steelhead so we are looking good. The weather has not been the best. We had some high water but the river is normal at this time. It is at 1300 cfs. This weather has helped the Smith and Chetco rivers. They both almost hit flood stage last week with the big rain we had. They also came up again from this last storm. They are both now fishing good at this time. These rivers are the last place you can catch a Salmon this late in the season. There are a few big ones also. The good Salmon fishing on these rivers should good for the rest of the month and into Dec. It all depends on our storms. If we get a lot of water it ends early and the Steelhead will start early. So either way we should have some good fishing. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: Oct. 25th Hello fishermen; You would not believe the great fishing we are having now on the upper Klamath River. This last storm brought in a bunch of new Salmon and they are biters. Today we fished from the Dam down and hooked over 20 fish and landed 12. And all this was done by 1:00. A lot of the fish we are getting look like they are just out of the ocean. This is really late to be still catching Salmon on this upper stretch. In a normal year we would be done with Salmon by the 15th of Oct. It is a lot of fun as long as it lasts. I think we will be doing good if it does go through the end of the month. The Steelhead fishing has been ok. I fished the past few days for them and did good. I was fly fishing and each day we landed 3 Steelhead along with a few Salmon and a lot of Trout. This fishing will only get better as the Salmon start to spawn. In a normal year they would already be spawning but they are late so they have not started yet. So look for some great fishing this next month. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: Oct. 20th Hello fishermen; The fishing on the upper Klamath River has been very good. The Salmon came up in good numbers and we were able to keep a few fish. The fish were in great shape this year. I have not seen such good meat in the Salmon all the way through the season. The salmon fishing is over at this time. They are there but they just do not like to bite this late in the season. We did land a lot of fish this year. Most my trips we landed around 10 fish with the best day landing 20. The size was a little smaller the first week but we saw a few of the bigger ones this last week. Most the Salmon were about 10 to 12 pounds and the biggest in my boat was 25 pounds. The season for the upper river salmon is always short, so if you want to fish it think ahead. The weather has not been as nice to us this past week. We have had rain almost ever day and one night over 2 inches. The river is up at this time and is flooding down below. The good thing about this rain is it brings in more fish. The Steelhead are here and should be good when the river goes down. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: Oct. 4th Hello fishermen; The upper Klamath River is fishing pretty good now. I am fishing form Iron Gate Dam down. Most the fish seem to be in the first few holes but there are fish moving in each day. I have been on the river every day and catching 6 to 10 Salmon a trip. I have been getting all my fish back bouncing bait. Most the fish have been on the smaller size but all of them are around 10 pounds. The biggest I have seen was close to 20 pounds. These fish at the first of the season are usually smaller so the bigger ones are on the way. Today I caught 10 fish and had at least that many on that we lost. The weather has been cold the past few days and I think this has slowed the hard biters down. Today was one of the coldest days we have had. It did not get much over 40 degrees all day and we saw a few drops of rain. I have caught a few Steelhead also but I am seeing a lot more trout then Steelhead. This is still early so these early ones are a good sign. So look for a great Steelhead run this year. The leaves on all the trees are starting to change colors, so it is nice view. I sure think it is going to be a early winter. We have also gotten close to a inch of rain this past week and snow in the mountains. So dress warm if you are planning on fishing. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: Sept. 30th Hello fishermen; I am now finished fishing the Sacramento river for the season. It was one of the worst seasons I have seen . Most days a fish or two was a good day. A lot of the days we did not get any. The fish we did catch were good sized, all of them were over 20 pounds and the biggest was at 40 pounds. There were just not the number of fish we need in the system to make it good. And if the Fish and Game says there are they are full of shit…. Anyway I am now fishing on the upper Klamath River out of Hornbrook. The fish are just starting to show now. At least there are fish. I fished yesterday from the dam to the fishhook and hooked 4 and landed 3. We also landed a few very nice Trout. Today the bite started out even better but then they raised the river on us and the bite went off. Before the water came up around 9:00 we had caught 3 Salmon. The raise put us out for the rest of the day but should make the fishing even better for awhile. The new push of water will bring more new fish up. The fish we are catching are not that big yet but these first ones are usually smaller. So the fishing is looking to be pretty good on the upper Klamath river this year. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: Sept. 6th Hello fishermen; Well the fishing has been a little slow for this time of year. I am on the Sacramento at this time. There are fish moving in but not in the numbers we would like to see. The counts over the dam have been around 100 per day. The overall count is a little above last year. Every day I go out there and hope the fish have moved in. Most the boats are getting a few fish per day but not limits yet. But that can change at any time. I did hear about some good fishing on the lower river so that is good news and they are on the way. Most the rivers up the coast are doing about the same, we are all waiting for the big push of fish. I think they are just late this year. Our Steelhead season on the Klamath River is already looking good. There have been a bunch moving in the lower river. I will start fishing for them in late Oct and through Dec on the Klamath. I do have some days left so if you want some great fishing with no crowds the upper Klamath is the place. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: Aug 4th Hello fishermen; I just got back from fishing the Kenai River in Alaska. Sorry about not having any reports but had no computer . The fishing was ok this year, was not our best but I did catch a few nice Salmon. The fish were not as big as we usually see, I averaged about 35 pounds per fish. I did get a few over 50 pounds and my biggest was 62 pounds. I am now moving to fish the Sacramento River out of Corning for the Salmon. There are few fish moving into the river now and the fishing has been ok. It should only get better as we get to the end of the month and into Sept. I do have a few days left so if you want some great fighting and great eating Salmon the Sac is the place to go. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: June, 7th hello fishermen; The Salmon fly hatch is on!!!! There are plenty of flies for the fish to eat now and they are coming to the surface for them. I fished the other day and did very well. We used dry flies all day and had plenty come up and go for them. A lot of them missed but we had plenty that did get a hold. We landed over 30 nice Trout and a few very big ones. Most the fish were about 10 inches but we landed 3 over 18 inches. The biggest was 21 inches and about 4 pounds. It is great seeing these big fish come to the surface and grab that big fly. Some of the fish you can see come form the bottom and get the fly. I really do not think there is a more fun way to catch Trout. This great fishing may last another week or two so you better get in on the fun. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: May, 15th Hello fishermen; Well the Klamath River is down now and the trout fishing is getting pretty good. The river is at 1400 cfs and in good condition. I fished the other day and landed about 25 trout. Most of them were 8 to 12 inches but we did catch a few over 15 inches. The biggest was 17 inches. We tried just about everything but the best was plugs. I tried flies a lot but really could not get them to bite them that good. With the warm weather we are getting now the fly fishing should get better. We have had a few hatches but most of them are still to come. The Salmon and Stone fly hatch should be a lot better this year, with the river down. We should start seeing them by the end of the month. This hatch is one of my favorites. The flies I use are so big it makes it easy to see and cast. So if you want some great action and a chance at a big trout on the surface the upper Klamath River is the place. The hatch will last into the later part of June depending on the weather. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: April, 9th Hello fishermen; The fishing season on the Smith and Chetco rivers are over now. The Chetco River is closed at this time and the Smith is still open from the forks down. So you can still fish the Smith for the few downers that are left. We did not see to many fresh fish the last part of the season, but there are a few Blue backs in the system. Over all the season was a good one. We did not see a lot of real big Steelhead but we did catch a lot of fish. The rivers stayed at great levels most of March this was do to the snow melt. This did make the water pretty cold and the fish did not bite as well, but at least they did. The only river that is fishing pretty good at this time is the upper Rogue. There are still a few Steelhead coming up and there are downers still around. I will be fishing there for this month and then I will start fishing for the Trout on the upper Klamath River. This will depend on the run off and the weather. But by May we should be looking good for the fly fishing and then the Salmon fly hatch will start toward the end of the month. So if you want a lot of action and some warm weather the upper Klamath is the place to be. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: March, 5th Hello fishermen; Well we have had some nice weather this past week. It has not rained on us for about 5 days. You would think the rivers would be in perfect shape but they are not yet. The past few days has been really warm and now the snow is melting and keeping the rivers high. The Smith is now down to 17 feet and the Chetco is down to 5550 cfs. The fishing has been pretty good for the conditions. I have been on the chetco this past week and averaging about 4 fish a day. We have been catching a lot of downers but we are seeing more fresh fish showing up. Which is great for this time of year. One day this past week I landed 4 fresh ones. Thought we were really doing great, but not so, the next day we did not get any. But since then I am getting about one a day. It is just going to be a great March with the fish we are seeing in the system. So if the weather holds out the fishing should be great. Hope to se you on the river. Albert
Date: February, 26th Hello fishermen; The weather is about the same. We have been out for a few days but the rivers are coming in now. The snow level has come down so we are not getting the run off. The Smith River has been fishing for the past few days and the Chetco may be in by the end of the week. The Smith is at 18 feet and the Chetco is about 5000 cfs. The fishing has been a little slow with all the water we have but there are fish out there. If this rain ever stops we are going to have some great fishing. There were some fresh fish coming in just as the river went out the other day. This is great news for March. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: February, 21st Hello fishermen; The weather has not really slowed down but at least we are fishing every day. The snow level has come down so we are not getting the run off. Both rivers are fishing now, but the Chetco was out yesterday by noon. The Smith river is at 17.5 feet and the Chetco river is at 4200 cfs. The fishing has been ok. The fish have not been biting well the past few days. Not sure why but we know they are there. This new rain we are getting now should bring in some more fish. The fish we are catching are pretty fresh, so there are new fish moving into the systems. We are seeing a few more downers now which is about right. This rain should start bringing more of them out of the upper river. So the action should to get better. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: February, 15th Hello fishermen; The rain is still with us. Now we have over 7 inches of rain this month and that is only for the last week. Last night we got 1.75 inches and today another inch. It is hard to believe we are still fishing and doing pretty good. I have been on the Chetco River the past few days and averaging 4 fish a day, and my best day we landed 8. We also caught a 15 pounder that day. We moved to the Smith today with the water coming up on the Chetco. The Smith River was coming up some but did peak at about noon. The fishing was pretty good this morning but slowed down by the afternoon. It is raining still so it is hard to say if the rivers are going to be fishing. When this stuff does stop we are going to have some great fishing. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: February, 11th Hello fishermen; Well now we have to much rain. We have gotten over 3 inches in past 2 days and some more on the way. The rivers are out at this time and still coming up. We really needed this but now it can stop any time. The Smith river is at 20 feet now and the Chetco is at 6000 cfs. Both are also muddy. The one good thing is that this will make the fishing great when they come down. The fishing was great just before they went out, so I know there is a lot of fish in the rivers. The other day we hooked 11 fish and landed 8 of them, all very nice fish. With the water coming up we saw a few downers, which is great for a lot of action. Yesterday started out great with a fish on the our first cast. We were doing great until the river started to come up and they went off the bite. So when the rivers start to drop the fishing should be great on both rivers. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: February, 8th Hello fishermen; The rain is finally here………..We got almost 2 inches Wednesday and the Rivers did come up some. I think the ground was so dry that an inch went in and we only got some of the run off. The Smith only came up a foot but still only at 14.2 feet and the Chetco came up to 1100 cfs. That is a lot more then the 600 cfs it was. It was raining again today but al least the fish felt better with some more water and they wanted to bite. I fished the Chetco toady and did well. We hooked 5 and landed 3 very nice Steelhead. The river was still low but it was a lot more water in it then we have seen for awhile. I think the fishing should only get better with all the rain that is coming. So look for some great fishing again and maybe some more water to fish. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: February, 4th Hello fishermen; We are still having some great weather but no rain yet. Everyone needs to think rain just not to much. Just like fishermen never happy with what we got. The rivers are even lower. The Smith is at 13.4 feet and the Chetco is at 740 cfs. We really can not even get through most of the riffles on the Chetco the river is slow low. The Smith is also pretty bad. We are hitting in a lot of the riffles. I am still fishing on the Smith and doing pretty good for the conditions. We have been averaging 1 to 2 fish a day. The fishing has been about the same all up and down the river. No part has been any better then the rest. It seems we are getting them in any of the faster water. I have been getting them to bite on both bait and plugs. I have not gotten any big ones this past few days but most of them have been about 7 to 10 pounds. The best news is that we have rain on the way. Hope it is not to much but enough to bring the rivers up. There will be some great fishing if we get a raise in the rivers. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: February, 1st Hello fishermen; The weather is still very nice out, with no rain at all. Albert
Date: January, 26th Hello fishermen; Well we still have not gotten any rain. We have a high pressure over us and it will not leave. The weather is nice but the rivers are very low and clear. The Chetco river is at 940 cfs. There is not much current anywhere to fish. I fished it yesterday and only landed one fish and missed a few other bites. There are fish out there, we are seeing them but they are in places that we can not fish them. Just sitting in the dead water. I fished the Smith today. At least there is current there. The river is very clear and at 14.2 feet and holding. I put in at the forks and fished to ruby. We hooked and landed 2 Steelhead. The first one we landed was a very nice fish. It was about 15 pounds. It took over half a mile to land it. It did not want to come in. We thought it was bigger then it was and he did also. There are fish out there just hard to get to bite in this clear water. So if you are going hopefully you can hook all the bites you get. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: January, 23rd Hello fishermen; The Rivers are really low and clear. The Smith river is at 14.2 feet and the Chetco is at 1000 cfs. We are hitting bottom in a lot of riffles and there is not much flow in a lot of holes. But the good thing there are still fish out there to catch. I have been fishing on the Chetco every day and doing well for the conditions. I have been catching 3 to 4 fish each day. We are still getting most our fish on bait and a puff ball just a lot smaller and lighter colors. I have caught a few fish on plugs but it is hard to run them without a lot of current. The bad thing is trying to keep people from running over the top of the fish with this clear water. So if you are fishing out there try not to spook the fish for everyone else. If we do not get some rain soon I may be fishing on another river. The Eel river is doing great with most boats catching 8 to 10 fish a day. You just can not keep any there. That is ok it is just a lot of fun to catch and land them then it is to eat them. The Rogue is fishing good also. These rivers take a lot longer to come in so when we are low and clear they are just coming in. That is good for a lot of people leave here and we have the river to our selves. So if you are fishing some pray for some rain. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: January, 18th Hello fishermen; We still have not gotten any rain and the river are even lower and clearer. I have been fishing the Chetco the past few days and doing pretty good. I have been fishing on the lower part of the river. Yesterday We caught 3 nice Steelhead and today we did a little better and landed 4. All the fish we are catching are on bait and a puff ball. I have heard of a few being caught on plugs. Yesterday Billy landed a monster Steelhead over 20 pounds on the chetco. It was a great day and the people were happy as can be. The best thing is that he is still out there to make more like him. If you are going to fish the Chetco you need to be very careful around pepperwood the riffle there has already taken one boat and is very hard to get through. You will want to walk the boat through. The weather is going to be the same for awhile so we are looking for low water conditions through this next week. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: January, 16th Hello fishermen; The Smith and Chetco rivers are getting pretty low and clear now. We have not had any rain for over a week. Today it did rain some and snowed also. But did not get enough to do anything to the rivers. Just made the day cold and wet. Yesterday I fished the Chetco river. We fished the upper river from the South fork down and did ok. We hooked 5 and only landed 2 of them. The bite was way down on the whole river, but today it was better there. The only thing I was not there to get in on it. I went and fished the Smith River. All I can say is that it was cold and wet all day long. We started out great with a fish on our second cast but then did not get another all day. It was tough. The river is only at 15.2 feet and very clear. The Chetco is even lower at 1600 cfs. Hopefully this front will bring us some more rain. Just not to much. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: January, 14th Hello fishermen; The weather is still cold but not as cold as it was a few days ago. The mornings have been in the 20's but getting a little warmer in the afternoons. It is tough keeping the guides free of ice when reeling in. At least the fish are starting to bite a little better. I have been fishing on the Chetco and doing very good. Yesterday we fished the lower river and hooked 5 and landed 4 of them. We caught all of them drifting bait and a puff ball. All of them were about 7 to 9 pounds. No real big ones. Today we fished higher on the river and did just as good. We caught 3 fish up high and 2 fish down on the lower river. Again we caught all our fish drifting bait. The water is getting a lot lower and clearer, so the baits are smaller and not as bright. The best part of the day was that one of the fish we landed was 18 pounds. It was 37 inches long and was just a fat fish. It is one that is going on the wall and will be the high light of this fishermens life. It was his first Steelhead fishing trip ever. Hope he does not think this happens every time he goes. I know there are a lot of fishermen that have been fishing for years and not gotten a fish that big. It just shows you how much luck there is in getting these fish to bite. I would rather be lucky then good any day. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: January, 12th Hello fishermen; Man is it cold on the river now. The past few days we have seen rain, snow , hail and just about everything that is cold. Yesterday we had snow down to the beaches and this morning it was in the low 20's. All day long it did not get over 40 degrees and the wind blew. We can kind of stay warm out there but the fish sure can't. The bite was pretty good yesterday but today it was off. The water was 40 degrees today and the fish just did not want to bite. We did land 3 so it was an ok day. We get spoiled out there catching to many fish. Yesterday on we say a few bigger fish up to 14 pounds but today they all were around 8 pounds. The rivers are starting to get low now and the Smith river is getting pretty clear. The Chetco is looking good but is getting low. The weather is going to be cold for the next few days so look for some slower fishing but each day is different so we never now. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: January, 8th Hello fishermen; The weather has been great here now for the past few days. Today it was so warm out I was in a tee shirt most of the day and got myself a sunburn. It was almost 70 degrees out. Not the weather you see in January. Oh well we love it. The fishing is just as great. Yesterday I fished the Smith River. The river was at 17.5 feet and had about 4 feet of visibility. In other words perfect. The fish did not bite real well in the morning but by about 10:00 the bite was on. I had one person out and we hooked 4 and landed 2 of them and had some other great bites we missed. Two of the fish were over 10 pounds and the biggest was 12 pounds. Today I fished the Chetco and did even better. The river just came in and has had no pressure so the fish were ready to bite. We hooked 9 Steelhead and landed 7 of them. We had a hard time finding any hatchery fish for our limit so we had to release a few wild ones. The fish we landed were very nice fish. Our average was about 9 pounds with our biggest being about 12 pounds. This fishing should be good for awhile. The weather is suppose to hold so the river should just get better. So if you are going you are going to have a great time. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: January, 6th Hello fishermen; We have been getting a lot of rain here but at least we are still fishing. In the last few days we have gotten over 3 inches. I have been on the Smith River and doing really good for the conditions. The river has been a little high. Yesterday we fished it at 19 feet and dropping and still we landed 2 nice Steelhead. Last night it rained again but the river was still in good shape. It was down under 18 feet and the color was great. The fishing was great also. I had just one fishermen out today and he landed 3 fish. The great thing was that one of them was 15 pounds. It was a very nice fish and fought like one that was even bigger. I think it took us over 15 minutes to land him. Took a few pictures and put him back. So there is a nice fish out there for someone else to land. It is not raining at this time and the weatherman says it should not for a few days so hopefully he is right. The fishing should only get better with no rain. The Chetco may fish in a few days if the weather holds off. So if you are looking for some great fishing the Smith and Chetco Rivers are the place to be. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: January, 3rd Hello fishermen; Hope you all had a great holiday season and the new year is good. I am now fishing on the Smith and Chetco Rivers. The fishing has been pretty good so far. The other day I fished the Chetco and hooked 7 fish and landed 4 nice Steelhead. We caught all of them drifting bait and a puff ball. We did not get any big ones but all of them were around 8 pounds. That night it rained a bunch and put the Chetco out so we went to the Smith and got in front of the river coming up and caught one fish. For the conditions we did pretty good. It was raining so hard that it was hard to see sometimes. The river came up and put us out around noon. It got up to 24 feet last night but is on the way down now and should fish again by tomorrow. That is if it does not rain any more. It is not suppose to but you just can not tell on the coast. There has been some big fish caught so far in this new year. I have heard of two fish over 25 pounds. So the big ones are on their way. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: December 6th Hello fishermen; Well the fishing on the upper Klamath River has been pretty good this past week. I am catching plenty of fish on every trip I have taken. We have been landing 6 to 10 adult Steelhead on most my trips. The other day we landed 12 and all of them we caught drifting bait. The only bad thing about the trip was that is was cold, cold. It started snowing on us as we put in and did not stop until late that afternoon. We had about 3 inches of snow in the boat. It was really pretty but wet and cold was the tough part. At least the fish wanted to bite and the heater worked. The next day was no snow but was cold anyway. The fish did not want the bait as much but they did bite well on plugs. The only thing bad about this day was the heater decided not to work. At least it did not snow again. The fishing on the Klamath should be good through the winter but I will be moving to the Smith and Chetco Rivers at the end of this month, so I will give the fish a rest. The fishing on the Smith and Chetco is getting to be pretty good already. They are catching good numbers of Steelhead and still a few Salmon. Both rivers are fishing depending on the rain. So if you are looking for the big Steelhead you better get your days in before they are all gone. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: November 24th Hello fishermen; I hope you all had a great Thanks giving day. Now it is time to get out and lose the extra pounds we put on eating to much. The fishing on the Klamath has been pretty good this past week. Most my trips I have caught fish. The Steelhead are about 3 to 4 pounds but I did get a bigger one this week. I am not sure how much it weighed because we let is go but I guessed over 7 pounds. This is a big one for the upper Klamath. We have seen a lot of smaller fish this week also, The hatchery released a bunch of smolt. This just kept us busy getting them off the hook and did not let anyone sleep. Most of the fish I have been catching have been on bait and plugs. But the fly bite has been ok also. The weather has turned really cold the past few days so the water temp has gone down also. The fish are still biting but the early morning is slow some days. This morning it was 17 degrees and I was very happy I was not out in it. The Smith and Chetco Rivers have been getting a lot of water this past week so the Steelhead fishing is looking to be pretty good. I do have a few days left for this season so lets get on the ball and go fishing. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: November 12th Hello fishermen; The fishing on the upper Klamath River has been pretty good. I am now fishing for the Steelhead. I am catching fish on every trip. Some days better then others but on the average 4 or 5 adult steelhead has been the norm. Some of the better days I am getting over 10. Most the fish have been about 4 pounds with a few bigger ones. I have been catching them on just about everything I have used. The weather has not been very good with a lot of rain and cold this past week. The snow level has been pretty low and we have seen a little on the river just not staying with us. This good Steelhead fishing should be good on through the month and into Dec. So if you want a good time the Klamath is a good bet. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: October, 17th Hello fishermen; The fishing on the Klamath River could not get much better then it has been. I think I have averaged over 15 fish a day for the past 3 weeks. A lot of the days we landed over 20 Salmon an I think the worst I did was 7 fish, which is still a great day. Most the fish have been around 13 pounds but I have seen a lot over 20 pounds and even a few over 30 pounds. The past few days we have seen a lot more jacks going in. Which is ok for the people that want to keep them. The Salmon bite is slowing at this time. So I will be looking for the Steelhead. I am seeing a few more Steelhead. The past few days I have landed a couple each day. This is a great sign for our up coming season. The run has been a pretty good one. The counts in the hatchery is great and there are still a lot of fish in the river. The weather is changing up here the mornings are getting cold and we have had a few days of rain. Fall and winter is upon us now. There is snow on the mountains and we are getting frost. This is the time the Steelhead fishermen get going. I feel it is going to be a good season. Albert
Date : October 11 Hello fishermen; The fishing was great today. In fact I think it was the best one I had this year. We lost count on the number of fish we hooked but we landed 29 Salmon and released all of them. To tell you how good it was we had 3 boats in the group we were fishing and we all together landed 72 Salmon. This is not something that happens all the time but it is a lot of fun when the fish really want to bite. The best part of the day was that there were only about 6 boats on the river with us. We are seeing a lot of jacks the past few days but they are a lot of fun to catch. We are also getting a lot of big fish. The biggest Salmon today was 40 inches long, about 25 pounds. We also had a lot more big ones on that we lost. We were catching a lot of fish but we were also losing a lot because the bites were very light. At least today the wind was not blowing us around all the time. It could not have been better. Hopefully the rest of the season is as good. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: October 9, 2006 Hello fishermen; The fishing on the upper Klamath is still doing great. I am catching plenty of Salmon and seeing a few Steelhead also. This past few days has been up and down. Friday it rained on us for most of the day and then the next day it was hot out again and today the wind was blowing us down river. So we have seen it all in the weather but the fishing was pretty good through it all. It was a little slower with the weather change but I have been landing about 10 to 15 fish a day. Today we did really good, we landed 20 salmon and 2 Steelhead. We have been getting mostly adults all week but today we saw a few more jacks. Most the fish have been around 15 pounds but the other day we landed one over 30 and another about 25 pounds. So there are some big fish still in the river. The hatchery is doing well also, their counts are up to 3500 fish and there are still a lot out there. So I am sure they will get their quota. It is good to see the Steelhead now which means we may have another great Steelhead season. So get the light tackle out and get ready for some fun. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: October 5, 2006 Hello fishermen; Well my season on the Sacramento River is over now and what a bad one at that. I have not seen it that tough of fishing in all the years I have fished there. Oh well that is fishing. I am now fishing on the upper Klamath River and doing great. They were trying to tell us the Klamath was going to be really bad and the Sac was going to be great but it is the other way around. I was maybe getting a few Salmon a day on the Sac and now on the Klamath I am catching 10 to 20 fish a trip. The fish and game do not know what they are talking about. When have they ever?????????? It sure is nice catching fish even if we can not keep any adults. Most the fish are 10 to 15 pounds but we are seeing a lot of bigger ones this year. I have seen a few over 30 pounds already. Today I landed 4 fish over 20 pounds. We are seeing a few jacks but not as many as there were at the mouth of the river. All the fish we are catching have been on bait, which is hard to replace when you can not keep any adults. This fishing should be good through the 20th or the end of the month so if you want a lot of action the Klamath is the place to go. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: September 6, 2006 Hello fishermen; The fishing on the Sacramento River has been tough the past month. There just were not enough fish coming in to make it good. I was fishing out of corning and doing ok. A lot of days a fish or two was a good day, but there were some better ones mixed in. The only good thing is that it can only get better. More fish are starting to show up now, but the counts over the dam are still lower then last year. So September is looking to be a good month because there are a lot of fish to come in. Most the fish I have been catching are around 15 to 20 pounds and most of them are on bait. The bigger ones are still on their way. I will be fishing the Sac until the end of this month and then I will move to the upper Klamath River for the Salmon. The season on the Klamath looks to be better then they thought it was going to be. There have been good numbers coming in the mouth. So our fishing on the upper river should be good. We will not be able to keep many fish but at least we can catch and release and keep the jacks. The jack counts are way up this year so this is a great sign for next year. There are a lot of Steelhead on the lower river so it looks to be a great Steelhead season. So if you want some great fishing with flies or bait the upper Klamath is going to be good this year. So go out there and get your fishing in. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: August 3, 2006 Hello fishermen; Sorry about not having a report for so long but I was fishing in Alaska and had no way to get them on line. Anyway I had a pretty good season on the Kenai River for the big King Salmon. My numbers were not as good as past years but the size of the fish were great. I landed in my boat 6 fish over 60 pounds and the biggest being just over 70 pounds. Of course there were a lot in the 40 and 50 pound class also. I will start fishing now on the Sacramento River for the kings. The numbers are not that good now but it will get better as we get closer to the end of the month. They are predicting a big run this year, over 600,000 Salmon are going to be coming up the river. Hopefully we see them all coming a once. I will again be fishing out of the Corning area. So if you are looking for that big one or just to get meat in the freezer the Sac is a good bet. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: June 4, 2006 Hello fishermen; The Klamath River is still higher then normal but the water is looking good. It is now down around 2900 cfs. Even with all the high water we are seeing the Salmon flies. The fish are not eating them very well yet but that will change any time. The fishing has been ok, the fish are there but they are not biting well. I am catching fish just not as many as I think we should. I am seeing a few big ones along with the smaller fish. The other day we landed one about 3 pounds. This was when the water was even higher. With the water coming down and the flies starting to hatch I am sure the fishing is going to get even better. Just remember that the Salmon flies and Stone flies do not stick around long so get out there. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: May 20, 2006 Hello fishermen; The Klamath River is starting to look pretty good now. The river is down under 3000 cfs and it is a lot clearer. We are getting a lot of snow melt now so this is keeping the smaller creeks up and the water at a colder temp. The fishing is ok and will only get better. The Trout are not that aggressive at this time but as the water warms up this will change. We are getting most the fish to bite bait but they are hitting just about everything just not as good. The fly fishing has been ok. All of the fish are biting wet flies. Of course the big stone is working good but other smaller ones are getting fish also. I have not seen any Stone or Salmon flies out yet but I think they will be on time this year. The river is looking great with all the high water we had it is very clean and not much moss left. I am sure by the first of June we will start seeing them. Now when this season starts it is a very short one. So if you are thinking about fishing the big dries start getting everything together now because it is coming up on us fast. I will keep you posted when I see the first flies come out. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: May 15 2006 Hello fishermen; Well the rivers here in the northern CA are finally going down. I think we will have a good trout season after all. The Klamath River is now down to 4000 cfs and is getting a lot clearer. The fishing is ok at this time but will only get better as the river goes down. Most the fish are right up against the bank or where ever the water slows down. The flies are a little tough to use now but the best was pulling them in front of the boat. Plugs have been working the best of all the things I tried. The weather has gotten hot now and there are a few flies out but I think there will be a lot better hatch when the water goes down more. The Salmon fly hatch hopefully will be on time this year. It is hard to say what all the high water will do to them. We should start to see they hatch out around the end of the month and last to the end of June. So if you are looking for some great fly fishing the Klamath River Salmon fly hatch is the place to be. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: May Hello fishermen; I hope you all are getting your fishing gear all ready for the great Trout fishing we are going to have. That is if the rivers ever come down. The Klamath River is still way to high to fish. It is at 5400 cfs and needs to be under 2500 cfs to fish. The color is still way off also. The Sacramento is the same but just a lot more water. The only fishing going on around here is some of the lakes and smaller streams are fishing. When the rivers do come down the fishing is going to be great. The poor fish have not seen anything to eat for so long they will be very hungry. This time may hit when the Salmon fly hatch starts. It will be some great fly fishing at that time. Hopefully this will happen by the middle to the end of this month. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: April, 22 2006 Hello fishermen; Just finished my last day on the upper Rogue river. The Steelhead fishing was pretty good this year. The weather was not the greatest but at least we did get to fish some. The Rogue is just about the only river that is fishing good at this time. The other day we fished out of Medford. The weather was great, it was one of the warmest days we have had this season. It got up to 75 degrees on the river and we did get a good sun burn. That is what happens when you forget to put sun screen on. We were drifting bait all day and did pretty good. We got plenty of bites but hooking them and landing them was the hard part. We did land two very nice Steelhead. The Klamath and the Sacramento Rivers are still out and may not fish for awhile. The Klamath is down to 5500 cfs and the Sac is still pushing 20,000 cfs. We need them to go down a lot to start fishing. When they do get to the levels we want the fishing is going to be great. The poor fish have not seen low and clear water for a long time, so I am sure they will be pretty hungry. So watch the levels and get ready to have some great Trout fishing. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: April, 4 2006 Hello fishermen; Well our season is done on the Chetco river. We had a great year when we could fish. The weather was not been on our side, but it is all good for the fish. The last day I fished on the Chetco the fishing was tough. It had rained all night and the river was coming up. So the fish did not want to bite that good. We did manage to catch 3 nice Steelhead and had a few other bites. Not bad for the conditions. We caught 2 on bait and the last was on a plug. The fish we did catch were downers but had a fresh one on. Now we can only look forward to next season on the Chetco River. There are still a few rivers that we can fish for Steelhead. The Rogue river is still open and fishing pretty good when the rains slow down and the Klamath is still open but is kind of high and has a lot of color and of course the lower Smith river is still open. I will be fishing on the upper Rogue for the rest of the month and then start fly fishing the upper Klamath when the river comes down. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: March, 30 2006 Hello fishermen; The rivers are still in great shape at this time. The Smith is at 16.4 feet and the Chetco is at 3000 cfs. Both are fishing good. I have been fishing on the Chetco . The fish are through out the whole system so I have been fishing up and down the river. We are still seeing a few fresh fish coming in but most the fish are downers. That is just fine with me. The downers love to bite and fight good. I am still getting most my fish drifting bait but a few are biting plugs. This fishing will only go through this weekend. The Chetco River closes the 1st of April, so there is not much time to catch that big Steelhead. Now the Smith River stays open until the end of April. This is only on the main stem. The forks are closed to fishing. The only other rivers that we can still fish for the Steelhead is the Rogue and the Klamath Rivers. They are open all year. I will be moving to the upper Rogue this next month. There will still be a few Steelhead left to catch there. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: March, 23 2006 Hello fishermen; The weather has held off for awhile and the rivers are coming into great shape. The Smith is down around 16 feet and the Chetco is around 2500 cfs. Both are fishing great. The Chetco has a little more color then the smith but the flow is not as much. The Smith is really clear but is still producing fish. I have been on the Chetco River the past few days this week and doing very good. I have been averaging 6 to 10 fish a day. This is great fishing for this time of year. Most the fish we are catching are downers but who cares they are a lot of fun to catch. I have still been getting a few fresh fish each day. I am still getting most my fish drifting bait and a puff ball, But a few fish are biting on plugs. In fact the other day we used plugs all day and landed 9 nice Steelhead. The season on the Chetco is coming to an end at the end of the month but it should be good if the rain holds off. The Smith will be open until the end of April so you Steelhead fishing still have a chance to catch one. I will be moving to the Rogue River in April for the late run Steelhead there. That should be fishing great with all the weather we have been having. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: March, 16 2006 Hello fishermen; Well we are getting a lot more rain then we really need in March. I think it has rained every day this past week. The only thing that is keeping us fishing is that the snow level is low and it is not running off into the river. The past few days have been pretty good fishing. I have been fishing on the Chetco River each day and averaging 4 to 5 Steelhead a trip. Some of the days are even better then that. Yesterday was one of the better ones where we landed 9 Steelhead. The only bad thing was that we did not do well the day before that. So each day is different. Most the fish we are getting are downers but we are still catching a few fresh fish. Yesterday 2 of the fish we landed were fresh and the rest were downers. This is still good for this time of year. Most the fish we are catching have been on bait and a puff ball, but plugs have been working also. The rivers are a little high at this time but should start to fish again soon. With the rain and snow we are getting the season looks to good through the closing. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: March, 12 2006 Hello fishermen; The fishing has been pretty good this past week. The rivers came down nicely and are fishing great now. I have been on the Chetco river the past few days and averaging 4 to 5 fish a trip. The good thing is that we are seeing a few fresh fish still coming in. Yesterday we were 50/50 uppers and downers. We are catching most our fish drifting bait and a fish pill, but there are few days that the plugs have worked well also. The Smith River is starting to get pretty clear now and is at 16.5 feet and the Chetco is getting down under 3000 cfs. I fished the Smith river the other day and did very good. We landed 5 very nice Steelhead. That was a very great day and I wish they all were like that. Then the next day we only caught one. What a difference a day makes. We are getting a lot of wind and rain at this time so hopefully it will not be enough to put the rivers out. Today was a lot slower because of the wind, not the rain as much. There were times we could not fish because it was blowing to hard. We did catch fish just not as many as we wanted. Tomorrow is another day. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: March, 5 2006 Hello fishermen; This past weekend we saw some great Steelhead fishing. The rivers came down after the rains we had great fishing at the beginning of the week. We were doing well on the Smith in the middle of the week and then we moved to the Chetco and did great there also. Saturday was one of the best days we had on the river this year. I fished on the middle Chetco and we started and ended with a fish on. We had 15 fish on and landed 11 of them. It was one of those days that you dream about. They were biting just about every where. We caught all our fish on bait and a fish pill. The water still had a lot of color and was a little high so the brighter colors were working better. Of course after such a great day you would hope the next would be just as good, but that is not how it works. That night it rained a lot and put the Chetco river out and the Smith came up about 3 feet. We fished the Smith and it started in great shape but as the day went along and the rain came down the river was coming up. It had good color but the fish just did not want to bite. There were very few fish caught and most did not get any. That is why we call it fishing not catching and we remember the good ones. The Smith river is at 18 feet at this time and is holding with the rain we are still getting. The Chetco is at 6200 cfs and will not be fishing for a few days. So try to stay dry and hope I will see you on the river. Albert
Date: March, 1 2006 Hello fishermen; Finally we got the rain we have been asking for. It started Sunday night and went through today. We got over 3 inches in those two days. Now the rivers are down again and fishing good. The fishing on Monday started great with fish in just about every hole, but by the end of the day the river had come up about 3 feet and the fishing was tough. The river got up to about 20 feet but went back down fast. It is now at 17.8 feet a great level to fish. The fishing has been ok. It has been hard fighting against the wind that we are getting. But at least the fishing is still ok. This storm is only going to help the fishing be good through March. So look for some great fishing in March. The Chetco came up a lot also but should be fishing by the weekend. It came up to about 13,000 cfs and now is down to about 5500 cfs. I hope the storms hold off and we will have some great fishing this week. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
Date: February, 25 2006 Hello fishermen; Well it has been almost a month without rain and the rivers are showing it. The Smith is down to 14 feet and gin clear and the Chetco is at 536 cfs and clear also. The Chetco is so low that there is no current in most places and we are hitting going through most of the riffles. There are still a few fishing coming in. This past week has been pretty slow for catching but doing a lot of fishing. But the past few days the fishing has picked up some. We just finished fishing the Cal-Or Derby this weekend. There was a lot more fish landed then we thought there would be. They caught over 100 fish in two days. That is great for the conditions we have. My team landed enough to get first place. We landed 17 fish in two days and we had the big fish for the derby. These derbies are a good thing, for we make money that goes to our hatchery and other things that help our fish. So if you see us out there it is all good. We are now getting some cloudy weather now and it is suppose to rain the next few days. So hopefully it will be enough to bring the rivers up some. With no rain some of the other rivers are starting to fish now. The Eel is now fishing and also the Rogue is fishing now. So that helps thin the crowds out on our rivers here. We are still catching most our fish drifting bait and a puff ball, but we are getting a few on plugs. We are starting to see a few more downers but also some new fish also. So the fishing is looking good for most our rivers so get out there and catch that big one. Hope to see you on the river. Albert
